Risky ‘Alleged’ Business

10 February 2009 33 views 9 Comments

I know we at BANDIT love to keep it high brow and intellectual, but I’d be lying if I don’t cruise the celeb pages or enjoyed tabloid stuff.

But something pretty serious happened on 12.30am on Feb 1st.

“The 20-year-old Barbadian-born star sustained trauma to her face and body, including major contusions to both sides of her face, a split lip, swelling, bruising and a bloody nose, US website TMZ reports.”

“TMZ claims it was an onlooker in LA’s residential Hancock Park area who called police after witnessing what the LA Times described as a “loud, violent confrontation” shortly after the pair left music impresario Clive Davis’s star-studded pre-Grammys gala at the Beverly Hilton hotel.”

Apart from the obvious, the recent ‘alleged’ situation featuring top RnB and Pop sensations Chris Brown and Rihanna does throw up a number of interesting things.

  1. Both high profile and young - Unlike the recent drug abuse stories of artists like Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston/Bobby Brown - this episode features 2 of music’s brightest stars and they are only 19 and 20 respectively.
  2. Domestic Violence in public? – The level of alleged violence (in public) is pretty much unheard of (or covered up very very well by the PR teams of celebrities).
  3.  The Timing - Both artists were hours away from scheduled performances at The Grammys, where they had both been nominated!

It is clear that what is capturing people’s imagination is the ingredients of -
 - two stars at the top (or near the top) of their respective careers..
 - being involved in such public violence…
 - on the eve of the music industry’s biggest night…

But huge props to those media sources who took time to research the alleged story a little, and provide some alternative information, rather than rehashing what TMZ already said.

MTV took the opportunity to use the situation in a positive way to provide information and urge young people to discuss domestic abuse (see here and here).

Thanks to  Tina Turner’s book I, Tina, and the subsequent film What’s Love Got Tp Do With It and more recently, Sharon Osbourne’s frank and honest interviews and writing about her experiences married to Ozzy Osbourne  – there are high profile examples of domestic abuse.

But this incident may have a far more wide reaching effect on young people that we first think.

I was following people’s reaction to this “live” on Facebook and Twitter, and there was a lot of “the new Bobby & Whitney sans crack” going on. And that is an understandable first reaction, simply because no one saw this coming…
But then i read mainstream media, and most of them only pick up on the negative stuff. Like in danish tabloids Chris Brown is all of a sudden a rapper, because he can’t be a pretty R&B singer and do THAT! And they then follow it with a story of how Chris Brown used to watch his dad beat his mom.

The rapper bit has since been changed, but it says a lot…

I applaud MTV for the spin they put on it, because to of the worlds biggest popstars collide, it’s a opportunity to take the bad, and do some good with it!

nice blog! obviously the majority of reaction comes from rumour and hearsay (as opposed to actual facts) but would say something like this is rarely 100% bad publicity for these artists – especially 2 artists who, image-wise, aspire to being both high-profile and ‘street’…

That would be risky as hell Isi!

Apparently, word on the street is Rihanna passed on a sexual disease to Mr Brown. He should of protected himself by using an Umbrella ella ella eh eh eh. No joke aside that’s the story right about now, doesn’t warrant a beating though.

Streetbeat, you shouldn’t believe everything you read. ;P

Especially Danish tabloids on American celebs. You must have seen the crazy ridiculous spelling or the lack of when they air award shows during thank you speeches and stuff.

Why wouldn’t CB be a rapper in their eyes?

Don’t even get me started on the police incident either!

Lets hope its not a case of things to come, we had Ike and Tina, Whitney and bobby, now Rihanna and Chris come on young blood learn to talk it out or walk away….

If it’s true he definitely ruined his image at a young age but the good thing about being young and fucking up is you still have time to correct and learn from your mistakes.

I can’t believe they won’t forgive CB for this incident if people can shut their eyes on MJ and R. Kelly.
