Everybody hates Drake, or at least I do.
As a part of the last couple years development of Hip-Hop music going more mainstream I have unconsciously build up some sort of hate for world famous ”momma’s boy”, Drake… But it wasn’t always like that.
The first time I heard of Drake was when Replacement Girl came out. I didn’t really pay attention to it and I considered it one of those songs that would just pass by and be forgotten… which it did. When he then came out with the So Far Gone mixtape and his first world famous track Best I Ever Had my hate really began. I didn’t like the song and I felt like everybody else loved it, which of course only made my hate stronger. I had trouble facing the fact that people placed it under the genre of Hip-Hop and besides that I really didn’t like how Drake seemed a little too confident for an upcoming Canadian artist, whose first two singles weren’t very good.
Now, following he did a bunch of stuff that I still today like and respect him for. His track Forever (featuring Kanye, Lil Wayne and Eminem) was a part of the soundtrack to LeBron James’ documentary More Than A Game, and dropped as a single back in September 2009. It completely changed my view on Drake…
Suddenly his singing didn’t annoy me at all, while his rhymes worked out very well too, which resulted in a new hope for a good artist.
When he then followed up with his next single Over my hate for Drake was literally over! Even today I still love the song and it really gives us the best of Drake. To me he’s very talented when he’s rapping and when he’s not taking the singing to far it works for me as well.
Over was his first single from the Thank Me Later album, which dropped in June 2010. At this point I was actually a fan of Drake and out of nowhere I found some love for songs like Best I Ever Had, realizing that modern Hip-Hop was just a completely new genre of music. So, with a positive attitude I listened through the album, expecting a mix of songs like Over and Best I Ever Had… I got disappointed.
There were a few songs on it I liked (Fancy, Find Your Love) but no new songs like the ones I actually liked. This wasn’t reason enough for me to start hating on Drake once again though, but it certainly disappointed me that he didn’t deliver on the rap side of his tracks, which generally lowered my expectations for any future songs by “Drizzy”.
So, now I didn’t hate on Drake at this point… but other people definitely were!
The most recognizable was the infamous Ghostface Killah, who is famous for being a badass rapper (in a good way if any doubt). In the beginning of March 2011 he did a “Top 10 Softest Artists in the game” and Drake didn’t not only take the first place, he was number 1, 2 and 3. Basically the list is one big diss to several young artists whom Ghostface isn’t quite satisfied with (and it’s hilarious).
Well, I really won’t argue with Ghostface, especially not after the recent drop of Drake’s second studio album Take Care. There are a couple of decent songs and productions on the album, but overall I really don’t like it…
I must admit I didn’t have any sort of positive attitude towards this album before listening to it either. When first reading the track list I was already expecting something bad! Especially the track Crew Love caught my attention, since a track with both Drake and The Weeknd couldn’t get any worse in my opinion. I could already imagine what part of Drake’s music repertoire that would be exposed in such song, mixed with The Weeknd’s music, which absolutely doesn’t do anything good to me at all. Besides that I’d already heard Marvins Room before the album drop, which made my expectations even lower.
Now, you might think that it’s just not the right genre of music for me to listen to and I really agree, which leads me to my main issue, Headlines.
See this is a good track with a decent video as well, but how on earth can he present himself like a “tough guy”, when he’s literally the biggest pu**y in the rap game. Don’t get me wrong on this, I think he’s very talented and it’s definitely exposed in this song, but to me this seems really fake meaning that he doesn’t have anything to back his attitude up with.
Maybe that’s why people are now doing stuff like this;
Never the less, after releasing Headlines, what does Young Money bad boy “Drizzy” do next?
In an interview with NY magazine he revealed what his future is going to look like;
“Oh, I thought you asked if I was gonna start a “Bun B shop,” like a shop solely dedicated to Bun B. I think I might open a Bun B. shop when I turn 30. [Laughs.] I’m very obsessed with smell so I actually want to — my dream, to be honest with you, my goal, is to form a fragrance and lifestyle line like candles, incense, room spray, and fragrance. I like Sephora for the store that I’d like to put it in. So that’s a big thing for me. I’m actually working on it. You know, that paired with some acting, maybe, like, one album in there somewhere.”
Basically, this only gives me the right reason to claim that his entire “look” and attitude in Headlines is utter bullsh*t, and it seems like the bigger rap legends agree with me.
Now, I don’t know exactly what started the beef between Ludacris and Drake, but the other day Luda put out this diss song aiming out for Big Sean and Drizzy, which in my opinion comes at the right time;
Overall I obviously have issues with Drakes entire existence in the “rap” game and that basically comes from disappointment. I’ve heard how good he can be and how amazingly talented he actually is, but when he completely ruins that with shitty songs and superficial toughness, all sort of love for Drake completely disappears. I guess I’m hating on him again now, which means he have to make something amazing to get me (and many others) back on track with him!
Drake, get your sh*t together!

Why does he have to be “tough”.. i don’t get why people hating on that. He’s just expressing how he feels and the people who connect to that will enjoy it. Maybe the video for headlines dose’nt show his true style but he has big labels behind him who have a lot on influence on his image. And to be honest i think that with all that pressure he still manages to expresses his true self, as you can see by people discussing it (you don’t see many people discussing what is Niki Minaj or Will I Am are really like as a person). Drake seems to be more honest and true to himself through his music and his image, you really cant hate on that.
People always first hate on something new because they don’t understand it or it isn’t in their comfort range and so are scared of it, therefore give it the label ‘I Hate it’, where actually its that they aren’t used to it so they need sometime to adjust. Also because it maybe cant be ‘placed’ in the Hip Hop category that is not a reason to hate, and he’s doing something new, therefore some people going to hate first but that will come around and people will like it again. Like you described in your post, you liked him then you didn’t. He sang that annoyed you ( it was new ) but then you liked it ( maybe you never hated it but you just went used it it ). Not really sure what i’m trying to say but i think he gets too much hate and i don’t really see why.
You’re missing my point a bit. I don’t consider him tough, I don’t want him to be tough, his music doesn’t scream out tough generally at all! When you’re making music like his you are not suppose to act tough, which he does. What I’m hating on besides parts of his music and his attitude is also the fact that people consider his music “hip-hop”, which I don’t want them to! And it’s not only Drake, it’s a bunch of new artist who has completely changed the genre in a more mainstream and soft direction, which I’m not a fan of.
The whole thing about the reason is that’s new I do not buy at all. I listen to new artist all the time, and my ear quickly tells me if I like it or not, the “new” factor has nothing to do with it. Besides that his first songs weren’t very original and that doesn’t really make them “new” to me. Take a look at an artist like A$AP Rocky.. He’s new, he’s original and what he makes is actually hip-hop, just slow hip-hop. I liked him when I heard him at first!
Now A$AP is teaming up with Drake for Drake’s tour, hopefully that won’t change his unique Harlem style.
Sadly, the Ghostface Killah blog post is a fake. Still hilarious and spot on though…
Hmmm. I’m conflicted. Part of me has come close to saying that Drake is the new L.L. of this generation. Nevertheless, the topic of the disappearance of masculinity(especially in the black community) has been a huge topic among my friends ages, 34 – 45.
I did think that Drake’s new album was inspiring enough for me to do a total rougher-remix of it – ibemusic.com.
Sorry for the shameless plug.
Important article nevertheless.
A friend sent this article to me, and after reading it I cant help but laugh!
I sense that you are not accepting Drake as an artist AT ALL!! But I don’t think that you understand what he is doing with his music and how he has added something very special to the rap genre.
Drake is one of those artists who does something very different with the rap genre (Kanye West differentiate himself as well). On every record he is trying something different with artists who is typically not in the rap genre, just to mention a few: Jamie xx (Take Care), Lykke Li (Little bit), Francis and the Lights (Karaoke), Peter Bjorn & John (Lets Call It Off), Illangelo & Doc McKinney (Crew Love) and more. It shows his creativity.
But at the same time he works with great rap artists like Lill Wayne, Young Jeezy, Birdman, Rick Ross, Timbaland where he express himself as a talented rapper and . Especially the tracks: Say Whats Real, Thank Me Now and Over are showing his skills.
Just because he is singing about subjects like love, heartbreak and girls doesn’t mean he is ‘Mommas Boy’ like u call him. It may be cliché issues but Drakes succeeds in making it something we can relate to because its real. Don’t forget that he is only 25 – he can still do much more in the future and improve himself. He may not be a hardcore rapper, but damn he is good at what he does ..
You are talking about Drake becoming mainstream, but who really cares?! Everybody want be mainstream. That’s how they make money and believe me every artist want to make money. IF YOU DON’T WANT MAINSTREAM DON’T LISTEN TO IT!!
Drake makes music which is not typical for rappers, and therefore he is not a typical rapper .. He is more than that! He added something new to the world of music and is actually doing it pretty well!!
Why is the world fascinated with Drake the fake! Let’s chronicle this kids life. He was born in Toronto to a Black Jazz musician and a White Jewish Teacher who named him Aubrey. Aubrey’s mother, the white Jew, and father divorced in the early 90s. So Aubrey decided to stay with his mother as she had a shit load of money. Aubrey grew up in the 90210 of Toronto, Forest Hill, and went to the most elite high school in the country. Aubrey grew up to be a well behaved, spoiled little brat that received a huge amount of money at his bar mitzvah. As a rich kid he didn’t care much for school, as he already owned everything a teenager could ask for. When Aubrey left high school early, he decided he wanted to act but with his eyebrows casting such a shadow over his eyes during auditions he couldn’t land a gig. So Aubrey decided to ask for help. Just like any other Saturday he asked his step-dad for a favor. He wanted to be on TV but was to ugly and lacked talent. With all of his power and connections at CBC, A Canadian version of public access television, Aubrey landed a small role on Degrassi. When the show was canceled he decided to become a rapper. Aubrey was already a millionaire so the only thing he needed to do was pay top notch producers and sign a distribution deal. Aubrey once again asked his step-dad if he had any connections in distribution then BOOM! He became a star!
Last name Graham, first name Aubrey!
The bottom line is it doesn’t matter if your on a label or not, all you need to make a hit record is money. A Timberland track costs a million bucks which is chump change for Aubrey. There’s a reason he keeps bashing Toronto, people in Toronto know he’s a fake! Except for the young women who tend to like anyone other young women are screaming over anyway.
Watch “Drake on Funkmaster Flex” below. It’s frickin’ awesome! Please also watch Aubrey’s cameo in the Lil’ Wayne documentary while he shits his pants when some guys try to get backstage. Aubrey’s not used to real gangstas. Wayne! How could you hang out with such a fossy! Let’s hope Baby treats him like Juvenile and we never see him again.
And finally, I’d like to give a shout out to the real Canadian rappers that should be recognized way ahead
of Aubrey; Kardinal Offishall, K-OS, K’Naan and Classified.
