Are you a Hipster?
The hipsters are the originators of all trends, but because they are ever moving, they never stay fans of something for very long. It could be as short a week, or for as long as a couple of months.
So if they’re not loyal or good consumers in a traditional way, why are they then so vital for brands and companies? It’s actually very simple, because everything starts with them.
Well that’s a good thing then, isn’t it? Yes and no. Yes, because when you persuade them to endorse your product, they create the best possible conditions, for your product to become very popular, and very trendy. No, because persuading them is very difficult.
One of the most important things to understand about the hipsters, is that they are in essence rebels without a cause. They love to express their opinion against things, often mainstream culture. Not realizing that they’re the first link in the evolution of trends, that evolve into mainstream. Often their opinions are fads.
The hipsters have a built in oxymoron. They are first and foremost a consumer group, a great and very resourceful consumer group actually, but they want things for themselves. As soon as they see something is becoming a bit too popular for their taste, they drop it and let’s the next group pick it up. But here’s the trick, the next group that picks it up, adds extra value to the product simply because of the fact, that they got it from the hipsters.
Some of the main things that bond the hipsters are fashion and music. This of course varies slightly from country to country, and even between the various groups, but they’re key parts of their culture. Where do you think plaid button downs, sticking your pants into your socks, and the electrofication of any and all music came from?
This is the hipster right now… They love sneakers, tattoo’s and mixing various clothing styles (streetwear with designer brands and second hand). They enhance their look with unique accessories, be it gadgets or clothing items. The hipsters love being visible in the nightlife (in a non camera shy way), as long as they control the location and the music. Therefore they often overcrowd small intimate places or take it outside, either spontaneously or at secret or semi secret arrangements, at alternative locations.
As a segment, the hipsters are like most young communities, with one major difference. They don’t see themselves as being part of The Hipster community, actually most will probably tell you that they’re not a hipster, were you to ask them. Even standing in front of you with their tight jeans, big glasses, lo-fi analog camera, brightly coloured shirt (or plain white, because statements on shirts are soo yesterday), holding their fixed-gear bike, they don’t want to be categorized. Like all other young segments, they see themselves as individuals, but in this case without a community.
But they are a community, a gathering of people that is the first line of attack, in creating a trend. A trend that may turn into a culture. A culture that may end up impacting your life.
…Oh and i predict that hipster will be the next word to die, due to overuse.
